Samuel Langhorne Clemens

"A big leather-bound volume makes an ideal razor strap. A thin book is useful to stick under a table with a broken caster to steady it. A large, flat atlas can be used to cover a window with a broken pane. And a thick, old-fashioned heavy book with a clasp is the finest thing in the world to throw at a noisy cat."
Mark Twain

Quote of the day

"A man in a bookstore buys a book on loneliness and every woman in the store hits on him. A woman buys a book on loneliness and the store clears out."

Letting students choose books could make them better readers

We often get parents and educators lamenting the book choices kids make.  However this article by Erin Anderson in The Globe and Mail raises some interesting points

Letting students choose books could make them better readers

"Reading for pleasure – and not because there’s an essay due tomorrow – has been linked to improved scholastic achievement. Some education researchers have argued that means letting students – particularly in middle school and especially boys – freely choose what pages they want to turn."

We may want kids to read the books we loved as a child. Yet, our well meaning choices may reinforce that reading is a chore, rather than a pleasure.
