Promoting events that celebrate cerebral pleasures and create community for our youth is what The Book Man is all about! Recently we were approached by the Homeschool Chess Club to ask if we would sponsor their prizes for their weekly chess puzzle and we heartily said, "Yes!"
Started in late September, 2009 there are already approximately 50 players meeting at Central Community Church's foyer on a weekly basis. Ian McKay of the Chilliwack Chess Club joins the group for the last 20 minutes to teach younger players valuable chess tips and tricks.
Currently they have sets for around 60 players. Chess clubs from St. Mary's, Greendale,
and a few other schools will be invited to join them in the New Year when they recommence their meetups after holidays. Interested parties are invited to contact Tamiko anytime!
How is The Book Man involved? Young players receive chess puzzles by email and solve them. They are then entered into a draw, and if their solved puzzle is selected (and of course, is completely correctly) they win a $5 gift certificate at The Book Man.
