What gives your life the most meaning?

The realization that life is a precious gift to be experienced with full awareness and heart, savouring each moment, the fun and love of our family, and being part of a wonderful circle of people.

What does reading mean to you?

When I finished school, I spent a year reading. I read 15 hours a day in the attic of a professor’s home near the University of Chicago and in the library. I read about all the ways of thinking I hadn’t encountered yet. It changed my life.

That year led me to the civil rights picket lines in Mississippi, to activist work in the ghettoes, to traveling widely – eventually taking me to a cabin in the Yukon where I met The Book Man…and never reached Hokkaido, where I’d planned to climb mountains.

Sometimes now I read a book in a new way – going inside the author’s mind as though I were living that life. Age and time has increased my capacity to do that, and it is still life altering.

What animal would you say best describes yourself, and why?

The owl…seems to be sitting still but is always watching, thinking, and planning who-knows-what. Enjoys solitude, sure of herself, moves quickly when she makes a decision.

Something your mom taught you that has been invaluable to you.

My sister and I learned to talk our way through any situation! We also learned that quality of life is determined by our choices and hard work, that kindness is really important, and to always eat our vegetables.

What are your hobbies?

I love walking by the river, reading the Wall Street Journal, learning about nutrition, writing poetry, sketching portraits, playing Monopoly and Scrabble, reading about frugality, and helping kids learn to read.

If you had to pick one word to describe yourself, what would it be?
When I worked at The Whitehorse Star, a reporter told me that the one word that described me was “cussedness.”
