We constantly come across unbelievable book covers, fantastic book art, and strange oddities that we feel are worthy of sharing with others.
It's hard to believe that after years of thought and development, that our books will actually be on-line and available for sale on our own website in a matter of a few days. Local customers will be able to choose their books, prepay using a credit card and either have the books delivered to their house for a small fee or be waiting for pickup. Customers will be able to experience the thrill of the hunt while sitting in their pyjamas at home drinking a cup of tea. We are all so excited to have this happen, and can't wait to share the good news with everyone when we go live! Sign up for our newsletter if you haven't already, and we'll keep you up to date with important changes like this!
I was recently informed that funding for BC Bookworld has been cut. This publication has been gracing the free press table at The Book Man for about a year, and is a favourite amongst many of our customers. When informed, I immediately decided to say my two bits to the powers-that-be, and encourage you to do the same.
Here is what he responded with when I asked him how I could help:
Don’t worry, Amber.
With help, BC BookWorld will stay afloat and we'll regain our funding. The wellspring of outrage from my 100,000 avid readers will galvanize my energies. I shall fight and win. They poked a rattlesnake in the eye. And the rattlesnake runs a newspaper. Not a smart decision. We have had coverage from dozens of media outlets such as the Globe & Mail, CBC's Early Edition, Quill & Quire, West Ender, Tyee, etc., and there will be more. I expect Campbell didn’t know what his new Culture Minister Kevin Krueger was doing.

Here's my letter:
To the Editor,
I co-own The Book Man, British Columbia's second largest used bookstore. We have a staff of 16, and are a cultural hub within our community. We have book readings, concerts, and half a million books to broaden the minds of our Chilliwack residents. We have a free press table, and one of our customers' favourite publications is BC Book World. We always run out of the magazines well before the next issue is due out.
In the land of redneck trucks, corn shucking contests, meat draws and WildCat Beer drinking at river parties, BC Bookworld is a NECESSITY to open minds, educate and share the power of literature.
No funding? Let's talk about the liquor budget of our government. Let's talk about the ridiculous Olympic games that will suck our province dry for years "Our Five Billion Dollar Street Party" as Geoff Berner so aptly put it. Put the money back where it belongs - educating the public, instead of getting our government tipsy at lunch and building bobsled chutes. Books change lives, open minds, educate, empower and give hope and insight.... and I will fight against anyone who does not see the intrinsic value in this.
With an unhappy face,
Amber Short
Manager

"This is the biggest pop-up book I've ever seen!"
"This book, here?"
"Yeah... this one!"
Three new smiling faces have joined our team! Make sure you say hi to Chelsea, Geri and Sara the next time you come into the store. With over 200 applicants for our positions, these three incredible women stood out from the very beginning. They won us over with their intelligence, friendliness and knowledge of books; all of qualities that you have come to expect from our oustanding staff. We feel incredibly lucky to have them joining us and will be posting staff profiles on them in the very near future!
